Donalds says he's unsure on vote to oust McCarthy but believes the GOP leader is in "trouble"
GOP Rep. Byron Donalds isn't sure whether he would potentially join others in voting to vacate Rep. Kevin McCarthy's speakership, he said Sunday.
"Quite frankly, I don’t know right now. I got to really think about that," Donalds said on Fox News.
Donalds admitted he thinks McCarthy is in danger of losing his leadership position and talked about the distrust in his chamber.
"I think he is in trouble," Donalds said. "There has to be some level of strong leadership in our chamber. I’m just going to be totally blunt: There are a lot of trust issues in my chamber right now, where people feel on both sides of our conference that everybody’s not going to hold hands and continue to do this work together."
Donalds talked about the issues House Republicans faced over the last few days when passing a stopgap funding measure, adding that he thinks this is "a terrible deal for the American people."
“There was never an agreement on what the top line spending was, that’s why we ended up at the situation,” Donalds said.
Donalds called on his colleagues to work together over the next 45 days, before the stopgap expires, and prioritize securing the border because "Joe Biden simply won't do it."
“At the end of the day we have to find a way to come together, stay focused as a conference, that’s what I want to do," Donalds said
