Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she advises her Democratic colleagues to follow whatever House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries determines as the best move regarding Rep. Kevin McCarthy's future as speaker of the House.

Republicans are potentially filing to vacate McCarthy from his position over his handling of the negotiations surrounding the narrowly avoided government shutdown.

“My advice to my fellow Democrats is simple. Follow the leader,” Pelosi said on CNN’s "State of the Union with Jake Tapper," adding that Jeffries has been a great leader for the Democrats so far, and yesterday's passing of the short-term funding bill was a win for the party.

More context: In practical terms, a motion to vacate the chair takes the form of a resolution to remove the speaker by declaring the speakership to be vacant. It is a rarely used procedural tool — and no House speaker has ever been ousted through the passage of a resolution to remove them.

Any member can file a House resolution to remove the speaker. According to House precedent, a resolution to remove the speaker would be considered privileged, a designation that gives it priority over other issues. Simply filing the resolution does not force a vote on its own, though it would be sure to ignite a political firestorm and a debate over the speaker’s future.

A vote on the resolution to remove the speaker would require a majority vote to succeed and oust the speaker from their leadership post.

GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz told Tapper on Sunday that he plans to vacate against McCarthy this week.
