3 tropical cyclones tracked as peak day of hurricane season 2023 approaches Sunday

There are three areas of tropical weather that are being monitored this week, including Hurricane Lee. Sept. 10 marks the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The Atlantic and Pacific basins are still buzzing with activity as the peak of hurricane season approaches Sunday, with powerful Hurricane Lee and Tropical Storm Margot in the Atlantic and Tropical Storm Jova in the eastern Pacific.

None of the storms are a direct threat to the U.S. at this time.

Hurricane Lee expected to strengthen over coming days

Category 2 Hurricane Lee is expected to restrengthen with dangerous beach conditions expected to develop around the western Atlantic through early next week, the NHC said.

Lee has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph with fluctuations in intensity likely over the next few days.

HURRICANE LEE REMAINS POWERFUL MAJOR STORM

On the forecast track, Lee is expected to pass well to the north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico over the weekend and into early next week, the NHC said.

Tropical Storm Margot forecast to strengthen

Tropical Storm Margot is located over the far eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean. The storm is more than 1,000 miles northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

Margot current has maximum sustained winds approaching 50 mph with higher gusts. According to the NHC, gradual strengthening is expected during the next few days, and Margot is forecast to become a hurricane next week.

Margot will not be a threat to the U.S.

Tropical Storm Jova crossing over cooler waters

Once Category 5 Hurricane Jova has quickly weakened to a tropical storm as it begins crossing over cooler waters. Continued weakening is forecast during the next several days.

As Jova slowly spins down, dangerous coastal conditions along the coasts of California and Mexico are occurring, the NHC said.

Jova became the first Category 5 in the eastern Pacific this season and, fortunately, is heading away from any landmasses.

NAMES FOR 2023 HURRICANE SEASON

The biggest threat from the cyclone remains to marine interests with high seas and rough surf.
