Police responding to gunfire at Brooklyn housing project shoot and kill man

Police fatally shot a gunman in a hail of bullets during a chaotic confrontation at a Brooklyn housing complex Tuesday night, cops said.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired at Rochester Ave. and Dean St. in Crown Heights saw a wounded man just after 9:15 p.m., and a 34-year-old ex-convict hiding behind a tree near the Kingsborough Houses, police said.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan told reporters 10 officers opened fire on the ex-con in front of a building on Bergen St., in a harrowing scene captured by officer body cameras and cell phone videos posted on social media.
“He had a gun in his hand. They saw it," Monahan said. “The officers gave orders for the male to drop the weapon. We hear the officers for over a minute — ‘He’s moving his hands, he’s getting up. He’s gonna go. He’s gonna go. Please drop the gun! Please drop the gun!’”

One Facebook video posted from the side of a nearby building shows flashing police lights, and a woman can be heard exclaiming: “They gonna kill him.”
Several seconds later, three women can be heard screaming, “Drop the gun!” right before the rattle of gunfire drowns them out.
The wounded man, identified by sources as 49-year-old Terrance Colclough, was in stable condition, Monahan said.

Emergency radio transmissions conveyed a scene of panic and chaos, with reports of shots fired, and officers ordered to find cover. At one point, officers on the scene were told to withdraw from the housing development courtyard.
FDNY officials reported five people, three civilians and two police officers, were taken to area hospitals.
Police later found an illegal gun at the scene.
The shooting isn’t related to George Floyd protests across the city, Monahan said.
