Man found fatally stabbed in burning East Harlem apartment; naked suspect taken into custody after trying to stop firefighters from getting in

Firefighters responding to an East Harlem apartment fire early Saturday found a 30-year-old man knifed to death inside — and a naked man trying to stop them from getting in.
Video taken by a building resident shows first responders carrying the 31-year-old nude dude out of the Acadia Gardens building on E. 120th St. near First Ave., a city-subsidized affordable housing development.
“He started the fire! He tried to kill all of us here!” one woman cries out in the video.
Police said the man ran out of the apartment after the 4:20 a.m. blaze and bit an officer trying to get into the ninth-floor home. Cops had to Taser the suspect before taking him into custody, authorities said.
No charges were immediately filed.
When firefighters entered the smoke-filled apartment, they found the victim with multiple stab wounds. Sources said the flames started on the stove.

The victim’s name was not immediately released as cops track down family members.

The man who filmed firefighters dragging the naked man out the building said both he and the victim were not wearing any clothes.

“The alarm was constantly going on and on and on,” the 62-year-old resident said. “I thought it was a fire.”

Medics took the suspect to Metropolitan Hospital for treatment and observation. Police couldn’t immediately say what his relationship was to the victim.

Five police officers were also taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

One third-floor resident, who only gave her first name Amy, said the man in custody strolled around the block a lot, but never bothered anybody.

“He was a normal person,” she said. “Quiet, minding his business.”
