Kari Lake opens speech by calling out "the fake news"

Kari Lake speaks at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 16.

Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake began her speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee by calling out what she called “the fake news” and “disastrous Democrat policies.”

“Frankly, you guys up there in the fake news have worn out your welcome,” she said, in an apparent reference to media organizations covering the convention. “You’ve worn it out guys.”

Lake claimed that “the fake news” has lied but that “Americans are waking up.”

Some background: Lake is all but certain to win next month’s GOP primary, but her refusal to accept her 2022 gubernatorial loss and her repetition of Trump’s 2020 election lies has given some Republicans pause. She’ll be facing Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego in a state Biden flipped in 2020 but that looks unlikely to go blue again this year.

She launched her 2024 bid for Senate last year in October.

This post was updated with some of Lake’s remarks at the convention and background on her Senate run.
