Biden Admin Moves To Reclassify Marijuana As Less Dangerous Drug

President Joe Biden’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is reportedly moving to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Attorney General Merrick Garland made the recommendation to loosen restrictions on the drug, The Washington Post reported.

The reported change would downgrade marijuana from being a Schedule I drug alongside drugs like heroin and cocaine to a Schedule III substance, meaning it could be obtained with a prescription.

“Today, the Attorney General circulated a proposal to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III,” said Justice Department director of public affairs Xochitl Hinojosa. “Once published by the Federal Register, it will initiate a formal rulemaking process as prescribed by Congress in the Controlled Substances Act.”
