Garret Graves Unloads On Matt Gaetz For Fundraising Off Effort To Remove McCarthy: ‘It’s Disgusting’

Rep. Garret Graves (R-FL) exploded on Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) during a House floor speech on Tuesday afternoon where he pulled out his phone and showed that Gaetz was fundraising off his efforts to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the speakership.

In his remarks, Graves highlighted the conservative accomplishments that the Republican-controlled chamber have achieved this year despite operating with one of the narrowest majorities in history.

“I keep wondering what is going on?” he asked. “Are we redefining what conservative is? What’s going on in this country today? What’s going on in this body? We have Freedom Works, Heritage, Chip Roy, and Jim Jordan say something is conservative” and yet a small group of Republicans say it isn’t, and somehow they are right.

“And all of a sudden, my phone keeps sending text messages,” he continued. “Text messages saying, ‘Hey, give me money.’ Oh, look at that. ‘Give me money, I filed a motion to vacate.’ Using official actions, official actions to raise money. It’s disgusting. It’s what’s disgusting about Washington.”

As Republicans debated on the House floor, former President Donald Trump called out those who were trying to remove McCarthy — whom he endorsed.

“Why is it that Republicans are always fighting among themselves, why aren’t they fighting the Radical Left Democrats who are destroying our Country?” Trump asked on social media.

While voting was underway to determine if McCarthy would remain speaker, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said on Fox News that he did not like the fact that Gaetz was trying to fundraise off of it.

“That makes me uncomfortable,” DeSantis said. “I think when you’re doing things, you need to be doing it because it’s the right thing to do. It shouldn’t be done with an eye towards trying to generate lists or trying to generate fundraising.”
