The powerful 6.8-magnitude quake that struck Morocco late on Friday was the deadliest and strongest to hit the country in decades.

The death toll has surpassed 2,000, according to figures released by the Interior Ministry, which also reported at least 1,404 people in critical condition.

Here is a breakdown of figures so far:

  • 1,293 dead in the province of Al Haouz
  • 452 dead in the southwestern city of Taroudant
  • 191 dead in the town of Chichaoua
  • 41 dead in Ouarzazate city
  • 15 dead in Marrakech
  • 11 dead in Azilal, 5 dead in Agadir, 3 dead in Casablanca province and 1 dead in Youssoufia province
