This is the World’s Largest Pyramid, And It’s Hidden Inside a Mountain

While the Pyramid of Giza is a remarkable ancient structure which rightly holds the title of the Great Pyramid of Egypt, it isn’t the ‘largest’ pyramid out there.

In fact, there are a number of other massive pyramids scattered all over the world which, like the Great Pyramid of Giza, is proof of our ancestors' architectural ingenuity and ability.

The Pyramid of Cholula, located in Mexico has been hidden deep inside a mountain for hundred of years. Covered by grass, trees, deep layers of soil, and hidden from modern society. This pyramid is considered to be the most massive structure ever built on the surface of our planet - with a base four times that of the Great Pyramid of Giza, it is as large as nine Olympic-sized swimming pools. Researchers still don't know who built this massive structure, but legends has it that was erected by Giants.

On top of the mountain, Spanish conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes, built a small church not knowing that beneath it was a massive Pyramid like no other on Earth.

In fact, it wasn’t until 1910 that the Great Pyramid of Cholula was discovered. There are some who believe that theGreat Pyramid of Cholula was so sacred and important to the ancient Cholula people that they covered the it with soil on purpose in order to hide it from the Spanish Conquistadores.

If the mere size of the Great Pyramid of Cholula isn’t fascinating enough, then the fact that this structure isn’t a single pyramid but six structures built on top of each other surely must be. Researchers estimate that the structure grew in different stages as diverse ancient civilizations improved various parts of it, and that it was erected sometime around 300 BC.

There are still many mysteries about the Pyramid. David Carballo, an archaeologist at Boston University, Massachusetts says ‘It appears to have been multi-ethnic, with a great deal of migration.’
