Are YOU cleaning your microwave filter? Thousands stunned after learning the little-known compartment should be cleared every SIX months

A TikToker has captured the attention of thousands after revealing how to clean the hidden filter in a microwave - a section many had no idea existed.

The US woman who runs the account '@mamasknowsbest' shared the now-viral video demonstrating where the filter can be found on her microwave and how to clean it.

While the filter on her appliance was up the top, the location changes depending on the model and is outlined in the instruction manual.

She said the kitchen appliance should be cleaned every six months, but many were unaware microwaves have built-in filters that require cleaning.

'This is your reminder to change your microwave charcoal filter,' the woman wrote in the video.

'You're supposed to change the filter every six months. So while I wait for my new one to come, I'm going to just clean this one.'

The microwave was built into the cabinet above the oven and the filter was found at the top of the appliance.

To clean it the woman simply opened the microwave door and removed the dirty filter then submerged it in soapy water in the sink.

Using a damp sponge and soap, she scrubbed the top of the microwave itself as well as the plastic filter cover.

The filter was then rinsed under running water followed by the plastic cover, then both were placed back into the microwave.

The short video has since been viewed more than 2.8 million times, leaving many shocked.

'Raise your hand if you didn't know microwaves had filters,' one wrote in the comments.

'I'm positive my apartment management has never changed these and I'm afraid to look,' another added.

Another asked: 'Ummmm quick question, do all microwaves have this?'

But another user said: 'Only the microwaves that are in the wall have them, countertop microwaves do not have filters.'

There are also a number of devices available on the market specifically designed to clean microwaves - including the Angry Mama microwave cleaner.

Alternatively others opt to clean the appliance by pouring half a cup of water into a bowl with sliced lemons and setting the timer to two minutes.
