Harry Redknapp sparks row with wealthy residents over plans to demolish a bungalow and build two modern homes in coastal suburb

  • Ex-football manager's property firm wants to demolish an existing bungalow
  • Wealthy neighbours unhappy of development plan to build three-storey homes
  • Residents say the proposal 'don’t respect the area and the people that live here'Harry Redknapp is embroiled in a row with wealthy residents over his plans to build two modern homes in a sought-after coastal suburb.

The former football manager’s property development firm wants to demolish a bungalow to make way for the three-storey houses in Canford Cliffs in Poole, Dorset.

One resident said the properties would overlook the back garden of her £1.2million home and others have raised concerns about traffic, noise and pollutionPlans for the project have been submitted by Pierfront Developments, owned by I’m A Celebrity winner Redknapp and his wife Sandra and run by their son Mark, older brother of former footballer Jamie.

The new houses would have double garages and flat aluminium roofs, and some residents say they are ‘out of keeping’ with the rest of the neighbourhood.

One who lives nearby said: ‘People pay a lot to live here because they think they will get a lot of privacy. We moved down here two years ago from London and this is not what we paid for.

‘This is a conservation area and what they are doing is out of keeping with it. They don’t care about the impact of the development.’Neighbour Chris Benn added: ‘The proposed buildings will be much taller than surrounding homes and will overlook a number of properties’ gardens and private space.

‘Putting two homes where one currently sits will result in double the noise, double the environmental pollution, double the traffic to that property. The land space is just not big enough to appropriately develop into two large, tall properties.’

The current bungalow, built around 25 years ago, is on a plot of around 13,000sq ft.

A third resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘The plans don’t respect the area and the people that live here. There is nothing wrong with what’s there now and these new houses will just take away people’s privacy. It’s a bit of a disgrace.’

However, another neighbour, property dealer Derek Low, said ‘what has been proposed is an improvement on what is there at the moment – it will enhance the area and keep house prices high’.

He added: ‘People will always find fault in things but you can’t stop progress.’

The plans are being considered by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council.

In a report backing its application, Pierfront Developments said: ‘The two dwellings can comfortably fit on the site whilst maintaining spacing between them.

‘The application site is enclosed by dense hedging and mature tree planting to its boundaries which largely obscure the property from its neighbouring dwellings.

‘The proposed houses will not appear out of keeping or incongruous when viewed in the context of the surrounding houses.’ The development is about two miles from the Redknapps’ former home in exclusive Sandbanks, known as Millionaires’ Row.

They moved out last year to temporary accommodation and are preparing to move into a £3.4million eco-home being built for them in Poole’s Branksome Park suburb.

A representative for the Redknapps declined to comment.

  1. ‘People will always find fault in things but you can’t stop progress.’
How is putting 2 buildings on a plot currently occupied by 1 property, progress?
