Missing cockatoo named Dundee with a penchant for beer and cigarettes is mysteriously found 100km from home - as his owners reveal plan to get him off the booze and darts for good

  • Dundee the cockatoo went missing in Darwin last month but has now been found
  • He's known to  frequently drink out of beer cans and 'enjoy' a cigarette at the pub
  • His owner said Dundee has been his companion after he suffered a severe stroke
Dundee the beer-drinking and cigarette-smoking cockatoo has been found after he disappeared in mysterious circumstances.
Trevor 'Pud' Bilston said he feared he had lost his 'best mate' for good when the bird flew away from a fishing shack in Bynoe Harbour, south-east of Darwin, last month.
But on Pud's 71st birthday on Friday, he received a call telling him Dundee had been handed in to an animal shelter in Berry Springs, over 100km away.

Dundee serves as Pud's companion animal and has nursed his owner through some 'tough times' since he suffered a severe stroke several years ago.
Pud's personal carer, Terry Smith, said he was delighted to have the cockatoo home, but they both agreed it was time to put him on a health kick.
'I told Pud to take Dundee to Alcoholics Anonymous and buy him a nicotine patch and see if we can break the bad habits he's picked up,' he said.
The cocky is well-known by the locals of Dundee Beach, east of Darwin, for his bad habits of drinking out of any beer can he find and chewing on cigarette butts at the tables outside the pub.

Pud believes the eight-year-old bird was 'searching for a girlfriend' when he became lost in unfamiliar terrain at the fishing shack and couldn't find his way back.
Shortly after he was spotted by locals drinking out of a beer can.
Pud believes his bird was picked up by a man with dreadlocks and driven away.
Mr Smith said they were still not sure how Dundee came to be in Berry Springs.
Pud said he had raised Dundee ever since he was a chick when he found him while landscaping in his backyard.
'I was using the bulldozer and I pushed down a tree down he was in and he came out squawking with no feathers,' he said.
'So I just took him in, and he's been my friend ever since then.'
