Limited-edition quokka coin to be released next month - but it's going to VERY rare

• The Perth Mint is releasing a special edition pure silver 'Quokka coin' next month
• Only 30,000 copies are being produced worldwide at a cost of $47.69 each 
• The 1oz coins will feature a smiling picture of the 'world's happiest animal' 

The 'smiling' face of the quokka is to be imprinted on a limited-edition pure silver coin, and collectors will need to get in quick to snap one up.  

The Western Australian marsupial will be featured on 30,000 of the new coins, to be released next month by the Perth Mint.

The coins will be on sale at $47.69 each and will celebrate the animals which are a much sought-after companion in selfies due to their seemingly happy expression and friendliness toward tourists on Rottnest Island, where they proliferate.

Quokkas are mainly found in the south-west region of Western Australia in scattered populations among forest and coastal health between Perth and Albany. 

But the greatest number live on Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth, where celebrity selfies have made them social media sensations. 

The likes of Chris Hemsworth, Margot Robbie and Roger Federer have posted social media selfies alongside quokkas.

The announcement is part of efforts to promote tourism for Rottnest Island in the lead up to summer.

Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said it's a good initiative to promote the region for visitors after a slow start to the season due to the sealed state borders, reported The West. 

'It (Rottnest) was used for quarantine there for a while and we're also coming out of the low season, there is a bit of a ramping up, this (birthday) is really going to launch the season for Rottnest,' Mr Papalia said.

'It's going to push us into bigger numbers than last year.'
