Bearly escaping: California wildlife officials drop ladder into culvert pipe so mother bear and her two cubs can climb out after getting trapped

California wildlife officials used a ladder to help save a mother bear and her two cubs who were stuck in a culvert.

Arriving with a tall ladder, officers discovered that the bears were stuck inside a 'vertical culvert that led to an underground water source.' 

Officers placed the ladder inside the culvert before backing from the scene, as not to agitate the mother. 

A couple of hours later, the bears used the ladder to hoist themselves out.

They then darted off into the woods. 

Officers returned to the scene on Sunday to retrieve the ladder and to also cover the culvert to 'prevent other wildlife from falling in.' 

The agency said in a Facebook post: 'Sometimes, being a wildlife officer requires patience – and a bit of creativity!'
