The three Minneapolis Police Department officers who were also at the scene of George Floyd’s death were taken into custody Wednesday, shortly after Minnesota attorney general Keith Ellison announced charges against them.
The since-fired officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, were booked into Hennepin County jail on charges of charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder while committing a felony, and with aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter with culpable negligence, both of which are categorized as “unintentional” felonies.
In video of the incident, which showed then-Officer Derek Chauvin restraining Floyd by kneeling on his neck, which a medical examiner determined caused his death, Thao watches Chauvin. Kueng initially helped pin Floyd down and Lane reportedly pointed a gun at Floyd before handcuffing him.
Ellison upgraded the charges against Chauvin to second-degree murder on Wednesday, two days after taking over prosecution of the case.

“We strongly believe these developments are in the interest of justice for Mr. Floyd, his family, this community and our state,” Ellison said Wednesday. “George Floyd mattered. He was loved, his family was important and his life had value,” Ellison said. “We will seek justice for him and for you and we will find it.”
However, he acknowledged, “I don’t believe one successful prosecution can reflect the hurt and loss that people feel.”
