A 28-year-old sumo wrestler died from coronavirus Wednesday, the sport’s first fatality, the Japan Sumo Association announced.
Shobushi, whose real name is Kiyotaka Suetake, died from multiple organ failure caused by coronavirus, according to Kyodo News.
He is believed to be the first person in his 20s to die from coronavirus in Japan.
Shobushi, who had diabetes, reported a fever on April 4, but was not hospitalized until April 8 after he began spitting up blood, according to the Japan Sumo Association.
He tested positive for coronavirus on April 10 and was moved to an intensive care unit in Tokyo on April 19.
“I can only imagine how hard it must have been, battling illness for over a month, but like a wrestler he endured it bravely and fought the disease until the end,” JSA Chairman Hakkaku said in a statement. “I just want him to rest peacefully now.”
At least six other wrestlers in the Takadagawa stable, where Shobushi fought, have also tested positive for coronavirus, according to The Japan Times.
Sumo, like almost all sports globally, has shut down, including the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, which was scheduled to take place from May 24 to June 7 at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.
More than 15,000 people in Japan have tested positive for coronavirus so far, with at least 657 deaths reported.
