A protest over in Minneapolis over the killing of unarmed black man in police custody erupted into an ugly, chaotic scene on Wednesday night in which one man was shot to death.
People looted a store, a fire burned in an auto parts store, and police used rubber bullets, flash bombs and tear gas against the protesters.
Minneapolis police said the responded to a report of a possible stabbing but instead found a gunshot victim, Public Information Officer John Elder said at a news conference. The shooting victim was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died.
“We do have one person in custody at this time,” Elder said. “And the facts of what led up to the shooting is still being sorted out. We are truly in the infancy of this investigation.”
The victim’s identity will be released on Thursday, Elder said.
Wednesday was the second night of protests seeking justice for George Floyd. The 46-year-old died Monday after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by a police officer’s knee. Footage of the arrest, which went viral on social media early Tuesday, has sparked outraged calls for accountability from the community.

The protest started peacefully, before things turned ugly.
“The situation near Lake Street and Hiawatha in Minneapolis has evolved into an extremely dangerous situation,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz tweeted. “For everyone’s safety, please leave the area and allow firefighters and paramedics to get to the scene.”
Looting was seen at a nearby Target during Wednesday evening’s protest, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported, while video posted on Twitter also showed the interior of an AutoZone on fire. Some people threw rocks and bottles at officers.
A smaller protest took place at the site where Floyd died.
The circumstances of Floyd’s death are under investigation by several agencies at the local, state, and federal level, including the FBI. On Wednesday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called for the arrest of the police officer who took Floyd into custody.

“I’ve wrestled with, more than anything else over the last 36 hours, one fundamental question: Why is the man who killed George Floyd not in jail?" Frey said at a news conference.

“We cannot turn a blind eye,” he added. "It is on us as leaders to see this for what it is and call it what it is. George Floyd deserves justice, his family deserves justice, the black community deserves justice and our city deserves justice.”
President Trump tweeted that “Justice will be served.”
