Angry onlookers pummeled a gunman in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon after he ended a fistfight by shooting his rival in the leg, cop sources and witnesses said.

Rafael Vasquez, 39, was winning the fistfight against a 23-year-old man whose name was not released, said the witnesses and sources.

As they continued to slug it out on Walton Ave. near Elliot Place in Mt. Eden, the 23-year-old pulled out a gun and opened fire, said law enforcement sources.

“There were some shots and one guy went down," said a witness, who didn’t give his name.

When Vasquez fell, onlookers went after the 23-year-old gunman. "The crowd came down on him and beat him up badly,” the witness said.

The bystanders “stomped him out,” a police source said of the beatdown given the younger man.

The 23-year-old suffered head injuries, said police sources. Cops were trying to determine if he was also shot.

A 22-year-old buddy of the shooter grabbed the gun and tried to run for it — but he was busted about two blocks away, at E. 170th St. and Townsend Ave., sources said.

Both the gunman and Vasquez were taken to Lincoln Hospital, and both are expected to face criminal charges, police said. The 22-year-old who grabbed the gun used in the shooting is also expected to face charges, cops said.

A fourth man involved in the incident was seen dropping another gun in a puddle under a car near the scene. It was unclear if that man was to be charged. Cops are trying to determine if that gun is also linked to the violence, sources said.
