A down-the-hall neighbor was busted in the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old Brooklyn man inside his 14th-floor NYCHA apartment, officials said Wednesday.
Gregory Spears, 39, faces murder and weapons possession charges for shooting Angel Medina in the stomach during a clash Tuesday afternoon inside Spears’ apartment in the Langston Hughes Houses on Sutter Ave. in Brownsville.
Early Wednesday, cops were waiting outside the Spears’ family apartment waiting to execute a search warrant when the suspect got off the elevator, said police sources.

Officers immediately took him into custody. Spears admitted to them he had a gun in his waistband.

Spears’ motive for the shooting was not immediately disclosed by police.

Medina’s wife was at home when the shooting occurred and made a desperate call to 911.

Spears fled the apartment with a mask on, sources said.

When police arrived, Medina was dead apparently of a gun wound to his stomach, a police source said.

The nature of the relationship between Medina and Spears was not immediately clear, officials said.

Medina’s wife said Wednesday she knew Spears, but had no idea what sparked the bloodshed.

“They were both good men,” she told the Daily News, declining to give her name. “I can’t believe this happened.”

A neighbor of Medina’s who often saw the victim with his wife in a senior citizen center on the first floor of their building was puzzled by the killing.

“(Medina) was low key but a really sociable guy,” the neighbor said. “Nobody knows why this young kid would shoot an older man.”

Spears was awaiting arraignment in Brooklyn criminal court Wednesday.
