A Florida man threatened to give an arresting officer coronavirus after being cuffed for allegedly threatening his mother with a butter knife late Saturday.
Brent Smith, 46, drunkenly returned to his Volusia County home Saturday evening and got into an argument with his mother, who lives there as well, according to the local sheriff’s department. Smith allegedly shoved his mother several times before grabbing a butter knife and “screaming at her, calling her obscene names and saying ‘I will kill you!’”
After his mother tried to call 911 for help, Smith allegedly grabbed the phone, which he was still holding when police arrived.
During the arrest, Smith began arguing with officers, all of which was captured on body cam, coughing on them and threatening to bash “your f--king brains in.”
“I hope you die," he said from the back of the patrol car. “I hope you catch corona. I hope the coronavirus, I hope it latches on to you.”
It’s unclear if Smith has tested positive for coronavirus.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood lashed out against Smith Sunday morning.
“If any of my deputies get sick after this, I’m going to hold this scumbag personally responsible,” Chitwood tweeted. “Can’t say I’m surprised a grown man with such little respect for his mother would also show this much hatred for law enforcement. Maybe they will teach him to cover his mouth in jail.”
Smith has been charged with grand theft between $750 and $5,000, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a law enforcement officer, tampering with a witness, aggravated battery on a person 65 or older, corruption by threat against a public official, robbery by sudden snatching with a firearm or weapon and a probation violation for a previous charge of aggravated battery on a pregnant woman.
He is being held without bond.
