In North Carolina rally, Harris says she wants to "seek common ground" with those who disagree with her

Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday held the first of three get-out-the-vote rallies she has scheduled for the day — telling a crowd in battleground North Carolina that she hopes to “seek common ground” even with those who disagree with her.

“We have just six days left in one of the most consequential elections in our lifetime. And we have work to do,” Harris said in Raleigh while also telling the crowd that “we will win.”

She presented a vision of unity over division, saying former President Donald Trump “has been trying to keep us divided and afraid of each other.”

“We know that is who he is, but North Carolina, that is not who we are,” Harris said. “And it is time for a new chapter where we stop with the pointing fingers at each other and instead, let us lock arms with one another, knowing we have so much more in common than what separates us.”

A version of those remarks is typical in Harris’ stump speech, but carries special resonance on Wednesday in light of the controversy surrounding President Joe Biden’s “garbage” comments on Trump supporters the previous day.

The vice president later added: “Here is my pledge to you: as your president, I pledge to seek common ground and common-sense solutions to the challenges you face.”

She added: “I am not looking to score political points. I am looking to make progress, and I pledge to you, I will listen to the experts. I will listen to those impacted by the decisions I make.”

As she was being interrupted by an apparent protester, Harris added: “and to people who disagree with me.”

She implored the crowd: “Let us please be intentional about building community. Let us please be intentional about building coalitions, because through all of that, we strengthen our nation because we know and will always remember the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us.”

Her rallies continue Wednesday with appearances in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Trump is also in North Carolina and Wisconsin today.
