'Like a car... it was huge': Surfer relives watching his mate being mauled by a four-metre great white shark before the beast made a beeline for him

A young surfer has opened up about the horrifying moment a 'monster' great white shark mauled his mate before making a beeline for him.
Miles Redfern was surfing with his friend Phil Mummert at 'The Farm' at Bunker Bay in Western Australia about 2.15pm on Friday when the predator attacked. 
Mr Mummert, 28, was thrown off his surfboard by the five-metre great white shark before being bitten on the upper part of his leg.'
Mr Redfern watched on in horror before the beast then came hurling through the water towards him.

'I was terrified. We all hear stories about how big they are, but seeing them first-hand was next level,' he told 9news.
'It was like a small car, it was just huge.'
Other surfers rushed to help the pair, hauling Mr Mummert onto a board and taking him back to shore. 
Mr Mummert was airlifted to Bunbury Regional Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. 
One of Mr Mummert's rescuers recounted how quickly the brutal attack unfolded.
'He's just sitting on his board and the next thing you know we just heard someone go "shark",' one of Mr Mummert's rescuers told Nine News
'I turned around and I've just seen this white (shark) kind of breach and it had already smashed, hit Phil.

'It just obliterated his board, it was just floating there like icicles.'
Despite escaping uninjured, Mr Redfern admits the ordeal has left him shaken.
However, he has vowed he will still return to the water. 
A Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development statement said they were investigating the attack. 
'DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses,' the statement read. 
The beach was closed while DPIRD officers conducted patrols, it has since reopened. 
There has been a spate of shark attacks on the east coast in recent months including five fatalities this year.
