Man raped his ex-girlfriend to prove he owned her and to 'teach her a lesson' after she left him

A violent rapist assaulted his ex-girlfriend to 'teach her a lesson' after she left him.  

The 34-year-old disability pensioner from Launceston, in north Tasmania, visited his ex-partner's home on June 14, 2019 where he vaginally and anally raped her. 

He was sentenced to six years imprisonment in the Launceston Supreme Court on Friday and will remain on the sex offender's register for 10 year, The Mercury reported.

The man, who has a long criminal history and a history of family violence, breached a family violence order when he entered his ex-girlfriend's home just after 11pm.  

The woman's son was home but arranged to be picked up after the 34-year-old began calling his ex-partner of nine years a 'slut' and an 'unfit mother'. 

Justice Michael Brett said it was 'fortunate' her son did not witness the actual rape. 

The 34-year-old told the woman she would 'pay the price for sleeping with other men' and that she would 'always belong to him'. 

He repeatedly said he was 'sorry' throughout the assault but claimed the woman 'needed to be taught a lesson'. 

The woman escaped to a friend's house and called the police after the 34-year-old put on a load of washing and later fell asleep on a chair. 

Prosecutor John Ransom read a victim impact statement describing the trauma the rape had inflicted.

'Having someone come into my house violently raping me and assaulting me has changed my life,' the woman's statement read.  

The woman said she could not return to her house for six months and would scrub herself in the shower until she bled after the attack. 

She also said she struggled to trust people and felt fearful around men.         

Defence lawyer Evan Hughes said the 34-year-old maintained his innocence but his use of illicit drugs had increased in 2013.    

A jury found the man guilty of two counts of rape on Thursday. 

'Courts and the community are shocked and outraged by acts of this nature,' Justice Brett said. 

The 34-year-old will be eligible for parole after serving three years and nine months of his six-year imprisonment.
