Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer knelt in silent tribute to George Floyd on Monday as they unveiled a package of sweeping policing reforms in his name.
The top Congressional Democrats led more than 20 lawmakers in a moment of silence that extended for eight minutes, 46 seconds.
That’s the exact amount of time that a Minneapolis police officer knelt on Floyd’s neck and killed him.
“You see how long it was to have that knee on his neck.” Pelosi said after rising.
The House Speaker was joined by House committee leaders and Schumer (D-N.Y.).
Before the moment of silence, Pelosi read aloud the names of Floyd and other black and brown Americans who have died at the hands of the police.
Many of the lawmakers wore African attire to honor Floyd.
House Democrats plan to push a wide-ranging package of law-enforcement reforms to seek change after the killing of Floyd.
The measure includes improved police training, a ban on police chokeholds and limits on the the use of military-grade equipment by local law enforcement.
It’s unclear if the Republican-controlled Senate would cooperate.

GOP leaders have paid lip service to opposing police brutality, but President Trump has denounced the protests as inspired by anarchists and far-left-wing extremists.
