A young child and four adults were killed in an horrific accident in New Jersey after their SUV slammed into a construction vehicle, officials said Monday.
The black SUV crashed around 11 p.m. Sunday on the westbound side of Route 3 near Ridge Road in Rutherford.
Three women and a man who were inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. A young boy was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, but later died.
All the adults were in their seatbelts, and the child was in a booster seat, officials said, the Daily Voice reported.
The vehicle crashed into the back of a front loader construction vehicle, which was being controlled by a driver at the time, authorities said.
That driver was not injured in the crash, and no criminal charges are being considered at this time.
“The initial thought is that it’s simply an awful accident — nothing criminal in nature,” said Rutherford police Chief John Russo, according to NJ.com.
Authorities have identified two people in the vehicle, but their names have not been released pending notification of family.
