New York City has detected 52 cases of "pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome” in children, the mysterious, potentially deadly condition linked to coronavirus, Mayor de Blasio said Tuesday.
That marked an increase of 14 over Sunday morning’s numbers.
Federal and city health officials are scrambling to better understand the condition, signs of which only began to emerge in recent weeks.
Out of the 52 cases of the syndrome in the city, 25 children tested positive for COVID-19, according to the mayor. Twenty-two of them tested positive for coronavirus antibodies, a sign they previously contracted the virus.
The number of kids confirmed to have the syndrome could grow, with 10 possible cases still under evaluation as of Tuesday morning, Hizzoner said.
A 5-year-old New York City boy has died of the syndrome, along with up to four other youths statewide, according to officials.
Symptoms include persistent fever, very red eyes, swollen limbs, rashes, abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.
De Blasio repeated calls for parents to contact health providers if they observe those signs in their children.
“If your child is off, if your child ... is not themselves and has at least one of these symptoms, call immediately to your doctor,” he said. “If you see multiple symptoms even more urgent, we want people not to hesitate here and if you don’t have a regular doctor, call 311 and you’ll be connected to a Health and Hospitals clinician.”

  4. So 27 cases tested negative to Covid. So how is it "covid related" again? It may just indicate the gross inaccuracy of their test.
