Two NYPD auxiliary officers died of coronavirus over the weekend, as the number of cops and civilian police employees testing positive for the disease surged past 2,200 Monday.
Auxiliary Sgt. Angel Leon, a 39-year veteran of the department who was assigned to the Bronx’s 43rd Precinct, died Saturday.
A day later, Auxiliary Officer Ramon Roman, who joined the NYPD in 2010 and was assigned to Brooklyn’s 72nd Precinct, also died of coronavirus complications, NYPD officials said Monday night. Roman was the father of an NYPD officer, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said Monday.

Their deaths bring the total number of NYPD employees to succumb to the coronavirus to 13, including one NYPD detective, eight civilian employees and four auxiliary officers.
On Monday, close to 7,000 NYPD officers called out sick — about 19.3% of the city’s police force.
So far, 1,935 police officers and 293 civilian NYPD employees have tested positive for coronavirus.
Shea announced that several NYPD officers have recovered as well since the pandemic took hold. “Close to 200 members of the NYPD have returned to work after testing positive for Covid,” he wrote Monday night, sharing a photo of two cops assigned to Central Park who have returned to work.
