“Weekend Update” co-host Michael Che on Wednesday offered to pay one month’s rent to all 160 residents of a NYCHA apartment building where his grandmother lived before she succumbed to COVID-19 earlier this month.
The 36-year-old SNL star made the offer on his Instagram page, writing, “its crazy to me that residents of public housing are still expected to pay their rent when so many new yorkers cant even work.”
He added, “obviously I cant offer much help by myself. but in the spirit and memory of my late grandmother, im paying one months rent for all 160 apartments in the NYCHA building she lived in.”
He called on the city to have a “better plan for debt forgiveness” for NYCHA residents, and asked Mayor de Blasio, Gov. Cuomo and Sean (Diddy) Combs to page him and come up with a plan.
Che’s grandmother died of coronavirus on April 5, the comedian said in an Instagram post the next day. The star didn’t reveal his grandmother’s name, nor the building where she lived. But in a tribute to her last Saturday, he signed off from “Weekend Update” as “Martha’s grandbaby.”.
