Joe Biden said Sunday he’ll wear a face mask when out in public, throwing shade at a president who infamously said he wouldn’t don a mask in the same breath he encouraged Americans to do so.
“It’s important to follow the science, listen to the experts, do what they tell you,” the Democratic presidential candidate said on ABC’s “This Week.” “[President Trump] may not like how he looks in a mask, but the truth of the matter is ... follow the science, that’s what they’re telling us.
“So, if I go out in public — and I have not gone to commercial places of late, I haven’t gone to my local church, etc., there are no services, actually — but my generic point is that you should follow the science," Biden added.
The comments marked a strong contrast with Trump, who shocked the country Friday by explicitly refusing to practice what he preached.
“The [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] is advising the use of non-medical cloth face covering as an additional voluntary public health measure,” he said. “So it’s voluntary; you don’t have to do it. They suggested for a period of time. But this is voluntary. I don’t think I’m going to be doing it.”
Speaking Sunday, Biden echoed New York leaders’ pleas for the president to fully implement the Defense Production Act, which empowers the commander-in-chief to order the nation’s industrial base to meet urgent needs.
“He’s just getting underway with it. There’s still no Defense supply — Production Act for gloves, masks, all the things first responders need,” the ex-veep said.
